Steel Magnolias is a bittersweet comedy, written by Robert Harling and made popular by the 1989 movie version starring Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Dolly Parton and Shirley Maclaine. The play follows the lives and friendships of six Southern women, as they meet over a period of time in Truvy;s beauty parlour in Chinquapin, Louisiana. The title of the play refers to those seemingly frail Southern belles, who survive any and all tragedies, proving their true mettle. Filled with hilarious repartee, the play explores the lives of ordinary women involved in the "ordinary" business of living, showing how each individual copes with the triumphs and tragedies of life. The unique and often eccentric characters are drawn with humour and pathos. The play celebrates the enduring friendships between women and offers this ensemble cast considerable opportunities to show off their fine talents.

The play runs in the Downstairs Theatre at The National School of the Arts from the 11th to the 14th October, with performances at 19:30 and 15:00 on Saturday the 14th.
