The cornerstone of the Dance Department's policy is to produce well-rounded, disciplined, dedicated, intelligent and fit dancers by offering the best physical training in Classical Ballet, Contemporary dance, African Dance, Spanish and Jazz Dance forms.

Performance, understanding and style are of the highest regard amongst the dedicated, very experienced and professional teaching staff. Learners are exposed to performances of all varieties, local and international guest artists and teachers, workshops, corporate events, competitions, arts festivals and they perform in Dance Department productions during the year.

Supplementing the training process of the learners into professional dancers, they also do Anatomy & Health Care, History of Dance and Music Theory & Appreciation. Learners are also exposed to Pilates and Body Conditioning, Theatre Craft and Stage work, Tap, Theatre Dance, Afro-Fusion and commercial dance.

Dance learners receive training in Classical Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz, Spanish and African Dance. Theory components include Anatomy, Dance History and Music Theory and Appreciation. Learners dance between one and a half, to two hours each day during school hours, followed by academic subjects.

Dance learners perform in school productions such as Dance Spectrum, Synchronicity and Dance Celebration every year. They have the opportunity to perform in corporate events, television recordings, stage events and at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

Many of our graduates from the Dance Department are performing overseas in dance companies or the South African Ballet Theatre situated across the road from the NSA. As the NSA places great emphasis on academics we have numerous dancers who prefer to further their studies in medicine, law or science at various Tertiary Institutions across South Africa.

Graduates form the Dance Department include Charlize Theron, Karen Beukes, Iain Mac Donald, Angela Malan, Bradley Shelver, Marianne Bauer, Timothy Le Roux, Kimbrian Bergh, Dilano Maritz, Sarah King, Lauren Dixon-Seager, Haydee Baker and Tanya Graafland to name a few. Dance educators such as Sonye Mayo, Ken Yeatman, Robyn Orlin, Jackie Semela, Vyvyan Lorraine, Bernice Lloyd, Jocey Pretorius and Fiona Lacy have all taught at the NSA.
